trypophobia skin, is it real?

 Trypophobia is a fear of holes. It is a condition in which a person feels fear or aversion to clusters of small holes. It is triggered when a person sees a cloister of small holes and this results in fear and anxiety. It is not recognized as a mental disorder and the research about trypophobia is very limited.

Triggers

Common triggers can be

  • Coral
  • Honeycombs
  • Eyes cluster
  • Bubbles such as soap bubbles
  • Strawberries
  • Lotus seed pods
  • Condensation of water

Symptoms

Symptoms include

  • Panic attacks
  • Goosebumps
  • Skin crawl
  • Body shakes
  • Discomfort
  • Sweating
  • Visual discomfort
Treatment

There is no treatment for trypophobia but exposure therapy can be effective in treating the disease.

Epidemiology

It is found that almost 16℅ of the people experience trypophobia to some extent. The majority of those people are women.

Is It Real?

Trypophobia is not recognized as a mental disorder. It is not a specific diagnosis in the American psychiatric association diagnostic and statistical manual fifth edition (DSM-5).

Further research is required to know about the nature of this phobia and its treatment.
